''PLACE THE CAR IN THE CENTER OF THE ITINERANT CAMP.''

Mobility

Stability

This project was realised with a group of 4, at ISD Rubika on Erasmus, while working together with Quechua from Decathlon. The starting point was to design a solution that placed the car more in the center of a mobile camp. First, research was done around camping styles, users, products from Quechua and camping with the car. The scope then was placed on a young family.

DESIGN BRIEF

First, research was done around camping styles, users, products from Quechua and camping with the car.

FOCUS GROUP

In the next phase a focus group was defined. In this case the scope was on young families with young children, who like to explore and share moments together in nature.

CONCEPTS

In the next phase solutions were defined for the problems and needs of the focus group, the young family.

Sketches and small prototypes were made as well as models on scale 1:1.

At the end of this phase the solutions were grouped in 3 different universes. Each universe has multiple solutions combined and has a different focus.

UNIVERSE 2

UNIVERSE 3

UNIVERSE 1

Universe 1 is focused on ease of use with one simple solid roofbox and different extendable solutions such as a relaxing roll, protection tarp and table.

Universe 2 is focused on mobility with more soft solutions that can be moved around, such as the storage
triangle and relaxing ‘chairs’.

Universe 3 is focused around a longer stay and playing with the kids. It involves a big tarp with an integrated goal to play games.

SKETCHES

Afterwards the 3 universes were
combined into 1, using feedback from
a survey, among other tools. In the
next phase sketches were made for this solution.

MOCKUPS

Next to that some sketched solutions were realised as mockups, small ones and on scale 1:1.

TESTS

The models on scale 1:1 were tested with the car by ourselves and different test subjects.

PROTOTYPING

A selection of the prototypes was made and these were combined into one model. This was further developed at the Quechua headquarters in Sallanches
(France), where a new prototype of
the tarp and relaxing roll was started
and finished at ISD Rubika.

RELAXING ROLL

This is the final solution which is a complete camping setup. It involves a roofbox with storage for the tent, relaxing seat and cooking table, as well as personal storage space for the user’s equipment.

On the left side of the car we can find a deployable table which slides from underneath the roofbox with storage pockets on the fabric
part and it can be protected by a raincover on the top.

On the right side of the car we have the tent with a transparent waterproof roof and a mosquito net on the front to create visibility. On the walls of the tent there are plenty of storage pockets. Inside the tent is a deployable relaxing seat which consists of a fabric that can be rolled out and fixed to the ground with pegs, as well as an inflatable tube to sit on. This relaxing seat also has integrated storage pockets.
